This is from a book called "Movers and Shakers" published by Billboard magazine. THE ART OF NOISE Anne Dudley (keyboards) J.J. Jeczalik (keyboards and programmer) Gary Langan (engineer) 1984 Jan Having met through their individual work as part of Trevor Horn's early 1980's production team (creators of hits for ABC, Dollar, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Malcolm McLaren), the original three members, all noted arrangers and producers in their own right, first get together after working on a strenuous session with Yes. The initial idea (consistently adhered to) is to release original sound, normally instrumental-only, in a faceless, almost group-less guise. The name, coined by ZTT Records' Paul Morley, comes from an Italian futurist manifesto. Apr First release "Beat Box" reaches US #101, but is a US dance floor favorite, and released on Island, climbs to #10 on R&B chart. Aug "Close (To The Edit)" stalls at US #102, but again does well on the R&B chart (#23) ad climbs to US #4 on the dance chart. Nov LP "(Who's Afraid Of) The Art of Noise", released on Horne's [sic] ZTT label, reaches UK #27. 1985 Jan First UK hit single is "Close (To The Edit)", an original, quirky non-vocal, which makes #8. Apr "Moments In Love / Beat Box" reaches UK #51 (the former later used by Madonna at her wedding to Sean Penn). Aug LP "(Who's Afraid Of) The Art of Noise" makes US #85. Nov "Legs", on the new China label in UK, makes #69. 1986 Mar A collaboration with Duane Eddy, on an update of his 1959 classic "Peter Gunn", puts them back in the UK top 10 at #8. June "Peter Gunn" reaches US #50. (It will later win a Grammy award as Best Rock Instrumental of 1986.) LP "In Visible Silence" reaches UK #78, and includes offbeat collaboration with TV character Max Headroom on "Paranoimia". Extracted as a single, it makes UK #12. Its success leads to the group's creation of the theme for Headroom's second UK TV series, and then to involvement with UK TV theme work ("Krypton Factor 2" and "The Return of Sherlock Holmes") and commercials for lager, aftershave and hair cream. July The bands' first-ever live concerts take place in Japan, US and (one date) UK. All are sold out. 1987 Jan "Legacy" is released in UK, without charting. July ZTT Records issues a compilation LP of early material, entitle "Daft", which fails to chart. Oct Third LP "In No Sense? Nonsense!" reaches UK #55 (without Langan, who subsequently becomes a floating group membe). Nov The band completes work on theme music for Dan Aykroyd's film "Dragnet", to be included on the soundtrack LP and released as a UK and US single. 1988 Feb Work is completed on a soundtrack contribution to the Fat Boys' film "Disorderlies". Mar "Dragnet '88" reaches UK #94, issued to coincide with the movie's UK release. (Individually, the band members' careers also blossom. Dudley's successes as producer/writer/arranger/player include hits by Lloyd Cole, Rush, Boy George, K.D. Lang, McCartney, A-Ha, New Edition and Five Star; Jeczalik's production and mixing credits include The Pet Shop Boys, Godley & Creme and McCartney; Langan's talents are on hand for Spandau Ballet, ABC, Billy Idol, Public Image Ltd, and many others.)
